Strategy

ÖzyeÄŸin University Business School | Undergraduate Compulsory | 2022 onwards

This course covers strategic management in three modules: 1-analysis of the current situation, 2-strategy formulation (with the pivotal role of the value proposition component of the business model), and 3-configuration of scope of operations (concerning value creation & value capture, in line with the value proposition). In the first module, two key components of strategy analysis are emphasized: analysis of the external environment of the firm, with a focus on industry analysis, and analysis of the firm’s resources and capabilities in relation to its competitive environment. In the second module, it explores strategy primarily at the level of the business unit, in its quest for favorable and timely market positioning for sustainable competitive advantage. The third module covers decision making regarding appropriate horizontal and vertical scope of operations (e.g., vertical integration, strategic alliances, mergers & acquisitions, business ecosystems) and also corporate strategy. This course encourages students to apply the tools and frameworks taught in the sessions to define and resolve the strategic issues faced by businesses in their unique setting.

Students work in teams to manage a virtual company, making key decisions on product design, marketing, manufacturing, and finance. The course emphasizes the application of strategic management concepts, the analysis of performance metrics, and the development of long-term strategic plans. It combines lectures, consulting sessions, and performance reviews, offering a hands-on learning experience where students test their decision-making skills in a simulated business environment.
